15 Heart Healthy Foods:

  • eat fish such as salmon, tuna, mackerel, herring and trout
  • a handful of nuts such as almonds or walnuts
  • eat berries such as blueberries, strawberries, cranberries, or raspberries that can be added to your cereal or yogurt
  • flaxseeds because they contain omega 3 fatty acids
  • oatmeal
  • dark beans such as kidney beans or black beans
  • a 4 ounce glass of red wine will help improve good cholesterol (HDL)
  • marinated tufu in your stir fry
  • eat red, yellow and orange vegetables such as carrots, sweet potatoes, red peppers and acorn squash – they are packed with carotenoids, fibers and vitamins that are good for your heart
  • use spinach instead of lettuce – you can put it on sandwiches and in your salads
  • eat fruits such as oranges, cantaloupes and papayas because they are rich in beta-carotene, potassium, magnesium, and fiber
  • eat asparagus again rich in beta-carotene, folate and fiber – only contains 5 calories per spear
  • tomatoes – provided lycopene, vitamin C, alpha- and beta-carotene – you can eat sun-dried in the winter months
  • dark chocolate – be sure it contains at least 70% cocoa
  • fresh broccoli dipped in humus – contains vitamins C and E, potassium, folate, calcium and fiber
