Health Benefits of Having a Pet

  • Strengthen Immune System – Being exposed to pet dander, especially during childhood, can strengthen the immune system as well as reduce allergies.

  • Improve Heart Health – According to the American Heart Association, pet ownership can reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease and may even help reduce cholesterol and triglycerides levels.
  • Catalyst For Positive Lifestyle Changes – A study showed that people who smoked quit smoking when they learned the negative health benefits on their pets.  Also dog owners tend to get more exercise by walking their dogs.

  • Weight Loss – A study showed that people who walked their dog for 20 minutes 5 days per week, lost an average of 14.4pounds per year without changing their diet.
  • Mental Health – Pets can turn our moods around when they start licking our faces or we see how excited they are to see you at the end of a long work day.  Studies show that people who owned pets were happier, healthier and more adjusted, and report less depression and appear to cope with grief, stress and loss better than non-pet owners.
  • Improved Social Connections – A study showed that young adults who have a strong connection with their pets, they report having a feeling more connected to their relationships and communities.
