  • 35.3% of deaths in American women over the age of 20, or more than 432,000, are caused by cardiovascular disease each year
  • more than 200,000 women die each year from heart attacks – five times as many women as breast cancer
  • more than 42 million women are currently living with some form of cardiovascular disease
  • more than 8 million women have a history of heart attack and / or angina
  • five and a half million women will suffer angina
  • heart disease is the leading cause of death of American women, killing more than a third of them
  • 48% of adult women have a total cholesterol of at least 200 mg / dL
  • women with diabetes are 2.5 times more likely to have heart attacks
  • risk factors include diabetes, overweight and obesity, poor diet, physical inactivity and excessive alcohol use
  • since 1984, more women than men have died each year from heart disease
 
Heart disease is the number 1 killer of women and more deadly than all forms of cancers combined.  Every minute, approximately 1 woman dies from heart disease.

BLS Fact of the Week

Less than 1/3 of out of hospital sudden cardiac arrest victims receive bystander CPR.  Immediate and effective bystander CPR can double or triple a victim’s chance of survival.

ACLS Fact of the Week

Atropine is the first drug of choice used to treat bradycardia – dose is 0.5 mg IV push every 3 to 5 minute for a total 3 mg.
