The Most Important Organ in the Body – The Heart

To me, the most important organ in our body is the heart.  Without it pumping blood to our brain, our brain stops.  So how does the heart work?  The heart is about the size of your fist and it pumps oxygen-rich blood throughout our bodies.  This amazing organ pumps 100,000 times per day, pumping 5 to 6 quarts of blood per minute or about 2,000 gallons per day.

In our next blog, we will follow a drop of blood through the heart.

Fun Facts About Your Bones

Bones – the dense, semirigid, porous, calcified connective tissue forming the major portion of the skeleton of most vertebrates, consisting of a dense organic matrix and an inorganic, mineral component

Fun Facts About Your Bones

  • there are 206 bones in your body — you start with about 300 bones at birth and they fuse together as you grow
  • the manible is the only moving bone in the skull
  • almost half of all the bones in your body are in your hands and feet
  • the hyoid bone is the only bone in your throat that is jointless which means that is not attached to another bone
  • the femur is the longest bone in the body connecting the pelvis to the knee
  • adult bones account for about 14% of total body weight
  • 14 bones make up your face
  • the smallest bone in the body is located in your ear — called the stirrup — it only measure 0.1 inches
  • every second, bone marrow produces 2 million red blood cells
  • we are about 0.5 inches shorter in the evening than in the morning due to the cartilage being squeezed while standing and sitting
  • the collagen in bone constantly replenishes itself so you get a new skeleton about every 7 years
  • cracking your knuckles will not increase your risk for developing arthritis
  • bones look spongy on the inside and filled with lots of air

The bones are a very important living connective tissue in your body because they help protect your heart and lungs.

BLS Fact of the Week

In infants, the leading causes of death are congenital malformations, complications of prematurity, and SIDS. In children over 1 year of age, injury is the leading cause of death. Survival from traumatic cardiac arrest is rare, emphasizing the importance of injury prevention in reducing deaths.

Motor vehicle crashes are the most common cause of fatal childhood injuries; targeted interventions, such as the use of child passenger safety seats, can reduce the risk of death.

ACLS Fact of the Week

The importance of diagnosing and treating the underlying cause of VF/pVT is fundamental to the management of all cardiac arrest rhythms. As always, the provider should recall the H’s and T’s to identify a factor that may have caused the arrest or may be complicating the resuscitative effort.

Interesting Facts About Your Lungs

Lungs – the lungs are a pair of organs located with the chest which remove carbon dioxide and bring oxygen to the blood — there is a right and left lung

Interesting Facts About Your Lungs

  • the right and left lung weigh 2.9 kilograms – the left lung is lighter than the right lung
  • the left lung has 2 lobes and slightly smaller while the right lung has 3 lobes
  • the left lung contains a cardiac notch with is a small place designed to accomodate the heart
  • the lungs are protected by the rib cage and connected to the spinal chord and the sternum (chest bone)
  • you can expect to breath in 45 pounds of dust over your lifetime
  • your lungs have 300,000 million capillaries — the total length would be 1,500 miles
  • all 600,00 million aveoli in your lungs have surface of a tennis court which means if the lungs were flat, they would cover a tennis court
  • it is impossible to breath and swallow at the same time
  • it is impossible to commit suicide by holding your breath
  • your brain senses the amount of oxygen and carbon dioxide in your blood and causes you to breath faster or slower
  • there are special cells in you lungs that produce mucous that serve as the first line of defense against infection
The lungs are a very important organ in your body.  They are the only organ in your body that can float on water.

Amazing Facts About Your Brain

Brain – an organ of soft nervous tissue contained in the skull of vertebrates, functioning as the coordinating center of sensation and intellectual and nervous activity

Amazing Facts About Your Brain

  • the brain is about 2% of your body weight but uses about 20% of total energy and oxygen intake
  • the brain is about 73% water –  it only takes 2% dehydration to affect your attention, memory and other cognitive skills
  • the brain weighs about 3 pounds – 60% of the dry weight is fat making the brain the fattiest organ in the body
  • 25% of the body’s cholesterol resides in the brain – cholesterol is important in the brain – without it the brain will die
  • the latest estimate of brains cells is about 86 billion although no one really knows for sure
  • each neuron can transmit 1,000 nerve impulses per second and make as many as tens of thousands of synaptic contacts with other neurons
  • all brain cells are not alike – there are as many as 10,000 specific types of neurons in the brain
  • the brain needs constant supply of oxygen – 5 minutes with no oxygen can cause brain cells to die leading to severe brain damage
  • brain cells can cannibalize themselves as a last ditch effort to ward off starvation – so in low fat diets, the brain can be forced into eating itself
  • the we only use 10% of our brain is a myth – we use most of our brain all the time even when we are sleeping
  • the brain has a pattern of connectivity as uniqie as your fingerprints

Amazing Facts About Your Heart

Heart – a hollow muscular organ that pumps the blood through the circulatory system by rhythmic contraction and dilation.  In vertebrates there may be up to 4 chambers, as in humans, with 2 atria and 2 ventricles.

  • a normal heart valve is about the size of a half dollar
  • the first heart cell starts to beat as early as 4 weeks
  • your heart is about the size of your 2 hands clasped together
  • your hearts beats about 100.000 times a day
  • the beating sound is the clap of a valve leaflets opening and closing
  • your heart pumps 1.5 gallons of blood every minute
  • the right side of the heart pumps blood to your lungs while the left side pumps blood to your body
  • heart cancer is very rare because heart cells stop dividing early in life
  • a woman’s heartbeat is faster than a man’s heartbeat by almost 8 beats a minute
  • the heart has its own electrical system and will continue to beat when separated from the body
  • every cell in the body gets blood from the heart except the corneas
  • the heart creates enough energy every day to drive a truck 20 miles – over a lifetime, that is equivalent to driving to the moon and back
  • cocaine can affect the electrical activity of the heart which can cause spasms of the arteries which can lead a heart attack or stroke
  • blood is actually is a tissue – when the body is at rest, it only takes 6 seconds for the blood to go from the heart to the lungs and back, 8 seconds to go from the brain and back and 16 seconds for it to reach the toes and travel all the way back
  • the pressure of the human heart can squirt blood 30 feet across the room
Remeber to always take care of your heart because it is truly an amazing organ.

BLS Fact of the Week

Survival of patients of ventricular fibrillation and pulseless ventricular tachycardia is highest when when bystanders deliver CPR and defibrillation is attempted within 3 to 5 minutes of collapse.

ACLS Fact of the Week
Because multiple organ systems are affected after cardiac arrest, successful post-cardiac arrest care will benefit from the development of system-wide plans for proactive treatment of these patients.
