Interesting Facts About Your Lungs

  • the right and left lung weigh 2.9 kilograms – the left lung is lighter than the right lung
  • the left lung has 2 lobes and slightly smaller while the right lung has 3 lobes
  • the left lung contains a cardiac notch with is a small place designed to accomodate the heart
  • the lungs are protected by the rib cage and connected to the spinal chord and the sternum (chest bone)
  • you can expect to breath in 45 pounds of dust over your lifetime
  • your lungs have 300,000 million capillaries — the total length would be 1,500 miles
  • all 600,00 million aveoli in your lungs have surface of a tennis court which means if the lungs were flat, they would cover a tennis court
  • it is impossible to breath and swallow at the same time
  • it is impossible to commit suicide by holding your breath
  • your brain senses the amount of oxygen and carbon dioxide in your blood and causes you to breath faster or slower
  • there are special cells in you lungs that produce mucous that serve as the first line of defense against infection
The lungs are a very important organ in your body.  They are the only organ in your body that can float on water.
